Carrie Coon

If you have ever seen an actress light up the screen since the early 2010s – both in a classical and contemporary sense – you may have stumbled across the talented Carrie Coon. She has been dazzling on the big and small screen since her career began. Since then, she has managed to gain some of the most coveted roles in entertainment of the era.

But how did it all begin for Carrie Coon? And what led to her becoming a recognizable face with longevity? Stay here on ThePornDude, and I’ll fucking explain it all to you!

Carrie Coon’s early life

Carrie Coon was born in Copley, Ohio, USA on January 1981. She’s the literal middle child of the family, with two older siblings and two younger siblings. Suffice it to say, Carrie Coon’s mother and father were fucking like goddamn rabbits around the 70s and 80s.

By all accounts, Carrie Coon was highly interested in acting from a very young age. She pursued her passion by attending the University of Mount Union, though she didn’t get a degree in acting. Instead, she achieved a Bachelors of Arts (BA) in English and Spanish.

She transitioned to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she then earned a Masters in Foreign Arts (MFA). Her BA in language certainly helped here, and it set her up for success not only at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, but also, in her future career as an actress. She wouldn’t have to wait long to prove what a talent she was after graduating with an MFA, though.

Carrie Coon begins her acting career

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Carrie Coon decided to try her hand at theatre. She began acting throughout the Wisconsin area, and was recruited almost immediately by the Madison Repertory Theatre. She debuted in the production of Our Town, widely considered one of the greatest American plays of all time.

After her debut in Our Town, Carrie Coon joined the American Players Theatre. Critics claim that the American Players Theatre is one of the United States’ greatest classical theatre troupes, so for Carrie Coon to join this prestigious group at the start of her acting career is quite remarkable. Carrie Coon enjoyed plenty of success with the American Players Theatre, enjoying four seasons with the company.

Due to her rising star power as a theatrical actress, Carrie Coon moved to Chicago, Illinois, USA, to get bigger and better roles. But, she didn’t abandon her gigs in Madison, nor with the American Players Theatre. Instead, Carrie Coon drove between Wisconsin, Illinois, and traveling with the American Players Theatre during their on-seasons.

It was a ton of travel for Carrie Coon. To support herself, she worked as a motion capture artist for several video games, such as Wolfenstein (2009), Singularity, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Uncaged Edition). ONLY the ‘Uncaged Edition’ for some reason. And because that video game sucked total asshole, I doubt you’ll be playing it anytime soon to find an example of her work anyway.

A few years later, Carrie Coon made her on-screen debut on the NBC series The Playboy Club. A crime drama about the beginnings of the Playboy Mansion, it was quickly canceled. Nobody wanted to see a crime drama about Hugh Hefner’s wrinkly balls, apparently. A year later, in 2011, Carrie Coon guest-starred on crime dramas like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Ironside.

Carrie Coons gains accolades in theatre

Despite the bad news about her on-screen debut role being quickly canceled, Carrie Coon’s move to Chicago proved to pay off spectacularly. She joined the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, and was cast as Honey in the production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, immediately placing her in the national spotlight amongst theatre actresses. The production quickly moved to Washington D.C. and then New York City, where Carrie Coon made her debut on Broadway.

Her performance earned her a Tony Award for ‘Best Featured Actress in a Play.’ It was highly celebrated, and absolutely propelled Carrie Coon into the national spotlight for not only acting in theatrical productions, but also, in the world of entertainment.

Carrie Coon’s breakthrough roles

Carrie Coon had much better success on-screen her second time around. She jumped over to HBO by jumping from network television channels like NBC and CBS. On HBO, Carrie Coon was cast as a main character on The Leftovers.

She lasted all three seasons, raising her star power and profile as an actress to celebrate even further. Though the first season of The Leftovers wasn’t met with much high praise, the seasons thereafter are considered some of the best television seasons in recent history. From then on, Carrie Coon was a high-stakes player for HBO.

The same year as her debut on The Leftovers in 2014, Carrie Coon made her film debut with Gone Girl. Within one fucking year, Carrie Coon had successfully transitioned from the world of theatre to being a force to be reckoned with on the big and small screens! The cream of the goddamn crop rose to the top, and with that, plenty of people creaming over the sexiness that is Carrie Coon!

Carrie Coon’s continued success

As The Leftovers wrapped up at HBO, Carrie Coon was cast in the lead role in FX’s anthology series Fargo. Based on the 1996 film Fargo, the last season of the anthology earned Carrie Coon a nomination for ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie’ and she also won a TCA Award for ‘Individual Achievement in Drama’ for both The Leftovers and Fargo.

After The Leftovers ended, Carrie Coon starred in The Post, a historical biopic about the publishing of the Pentagon Papers. Later in 2018, she was a co-star in the heist film Widows. And that same year, she even appeared in Avengers: Infinity War!

But, Carrie Coon didn’t portray anyone you’d recognize. Because she had past motion capture experience with video games, Carrie Coon was able to provide voice and motion capturing for Proxima Midnight, a member of The Black Order, a group working for Thanos.

The same year, Carrie Coon also starred in the second season of the show The Sinner: a cop anthology series starring Detective Harry Ambrose at different points of his career. Thereafter, Carrie Coon jumped over to star in the film The Nest: the first film that Carrie Coon had ever starred in. This starring role earned her a Canadian Screen Award nomination for ‘Best Actress.’

“It was unusual for me to be offered a leading part in a movie,” said Carrie Coon in an interview with IndieWire in 2024. “They needed to have a famous person playing the other part in order to get that movie made. And Jude [Law] was just marvelous to work with. It almost felt like working on a play in this English manor house in Oxfordshire.”

Carrie Coon returns to HBO

Carrie Coon returned to HBO to co-star in the historical drama The Gilded Age. Debuting in January 2022, Carrie Coon portrayed Bertha Russell: a would-be socialite in the late 19th century who, along with her husband George Russell, transforms New York City forever. It was an immediate hit, and was quickly renewed for a second and third season, respectively.

Once again, Carrie Coon earned another set of nominations for her role, earning an ‘Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series’ at the 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Along with a ‘Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series’ at the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards, respectively. No matter where Carrie Coon goes, she’s met with critical praise.
