Eva Longoria

Eva Longoria was relatively unknown before the smash TV hit Desperate Housewives aired - that show was pretty much the Sex And The City of the 2000s, and it was hugely popular while it ran from 2004 to 2012. Well, on second thought I wouldn’t exactly call Desperate Housewives the Sex And The City of The 2000s -  it’s more like Sex And The Suburbs if anything else since the show itself was primarily based in a suburban setting, at least according to what little I can remember from it. Yeah, I never really watched Sex And The City since I’m not a wine mom or a frustrated female obsessed with female empowerment. But I did catch a few glimpses of it while it was airing on TV back in the 2000s, and the one thing that stood out from that show most to me was none other than Eva Longoria herself.

She was a drop-dead gorgeous vixen in that show, and she still is today. Eva Longoria can be best described as a real A-tier Latina mommy who could get your blood boiling with little to no effort. Hell just watching her talk is enough to make your pants tighter, let alone anything more explicit than that. That being said, It’s safe to establish that Eva made Desperate Housewives since the other housewives in that show just weren’t as iconic as she was - I mean, do you remember any other housewives from Desperate Housewives besides Eva?

Didn’t think so. But just how did Eva Longoria become Eva Longoria? More specifically, how did she end up snagging a leading role in one of the most popular female-centric TV shows of the 2000s? Well, if that question has you up at night for whatever reason, or if you’re just really into Eva Longoria (I mean, who wouldn’t be), then why not keep reading and find out everything there is to know about the saucy mama that she is?

Eva Was Raised In A Very Close-Knit, Hardworking Family

Eva Jacqueline Longoria was born on March 15, 1975, in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA. She was the youngest of four daughters born to Mexican-American parents, Ella Eva and Enrique Longoria Jr. Her early life was far from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, as she was raised in a conservative family that valued hard work among other traditionalistic principles. Tex-Mex families tend to be very hardworking in general, so it’s safe to say that becoming a famous actress was nowhere on Eva’s compass during her childhood, even though she did occasionally think about it as a youth.

But even though Eva’s traditional God-fearing family wasn’t connected to the entertainment industry in any way, her upbringing nevertheless taught her the importance of perseverance, determination, dedication, and education, which definitely helped her become the famous actress we know her to be today. That being said, before Eva became a famous actress, she was a model who attended several beauty pageants (no surprise there), and she also attended Texas A&M University-Kingsville, where she studied kinesiology to become a physical therapist.

She Eventually Got Involved In Modeling, And Afterward She Decided To Pursue Acting In LA

During the late 1990s, Eva started to participate in beauty pageants, meaning that somewhere along the line she realized all too clearly that she was a bombastic Latina, and decided to capitalize on her jaw-dropping looks. Eva’s early beauty pageants provided her with ample experience which would prove invaluable for her in her later acting career - in other words, they taught her how to deal with fame. That being said, some of the more popular beauty pageants that Longoria participated in include Miss Teen USA and Miss Corpus Christi, the latter of which she won first place in 1998.

In that same year, she also earned a Bachelor of Science degree for her kinesiology studies, however, she gave up on her rather unexciting dream of becoming a physical therapist and decided to pursue acting instead, which is why she moved to LA from her birth town of Corpus Christi soon afterward. In LA Eva gained acting experience through classes, workshops, and practical work in the field and eventually she landed her first official TV role in 2000 as an unnamed flight attendant for the hit TV show Beverly Hills 90210.

Eva Managed To Snag A Few TV Roles Before Desperate Housewives

So, after appearing as “unnamed flight attendant #3” in an episode of Beverly Hills 90210, Eva also snagged another uncredited one-episode TV role in the same year, as she also starred as “Brenda Barett Lookalike” in a single episode of the TV show General Hospital. However, after those two one-episode appearances, Eva’s acting career started to blossom as she started bagging more memorable roles in TV shows. For example, in 2001 Eva bagged a key role in the popular US soap opera The Young and The Restless, which was admittedly her biggest TV role before she starred as Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives. In The Young and The Restless, Eva starred as Isabella Brana, and appeared in a total of 303 episodes in that show.

Afterward, Eva bagged a leading role in an obscure 2003 crime movie called Snitch’d, in which she played a high schooler named Gabby. This movie didn’t do well financially, so it’s safe to say that it didn’t do much for Eva’s acting career. However, only a year later in 2004, Eva would star in a leading role as Gabrielle Solis in the super-popular Desperate Housewives, a show which arguably made her career. That show made her globally famous, and is the reason why Eva became one of the most popular female celebs of the 2000s - it’s also likely the reason why she continues to be a professional TV actor to this day.

Her Big Break Came With Desperate Housewives

Eva Longoria became world famous after she appeared as Gabrielle Solis in Desperate Housewives; a stunningly beautiful woman with a glamorous and high-maintenance appearance who was initially portrayed with as a shallow, materialistic narcissist. Eva’s character Gabrielle is married to Carlos Solis in the show, a wealthy businessman who like most wealthy businessmen seldom pays attention to his wife, which is why there is infidelity on both sides of the marriage. Gabrielle Solis eventually becomes a mother in the show, but as you can probably guess, she turns out to be a bad mother, as she oftentimes neglects her children in place of pursuing her own shallow and materialistic desires, like a true and devoted narcissist.

Eventually, Gabrielle starts to become aware of the emptiness and utter unfulfillment that her materialistic lifestyle brings, and that’s where her character development begins. In time, Gabrielle’s character becomes more empathetic and caring, especially towards her children, and towards the end of the show, she transforms into a much more authentic person who is actually capable of caring about other people as opposed to being a narcissistic materialist. Eva Longoria received many award nominations for her critically acclaimed role as Gabrielle Solis, which to this day remains her most iconic acting role.

What About Longoria’s Post-Desperate Housewives Career?

After Desperate Housewives Longoria continued to have a successful career in the entertainment industry, appearing in various TV shows and movies, including Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Telenovela, Jane The Virgin, Empire, Over Her Dead Body, Frontera, The Baytown Outlaws, Lowriders, Any Day, Visions, Overboard, Dog Days, BoJack Horseman, The Simpsons, Dora And The Lost City of Gold, Sylvie’s Love, Flipped, Unplugging, Aristotle and Donte Discover The Secrets Of The Universe, Tell It Like A Woman and so on.

She also helped produce the first John Wick movie, which is a pretty interesting little factlet to know. Longoria also co-owns the popular LA-based Latin restaurant Beso, is the author of a cookbook, has invested in several tech startups, mostly ones with female owners as she’s passionate about inclusion in the tech industry, has her own fragrance line and is involved with political activism and philanthropy, especially when it comes to immigration reform an women's rights.

  • She was the reason why Desperate Housewives was so popular
  • She’s still just as sexy even today
  • Eva Longoria actually helped produce the first John Wick movie, which is a pretty cool fact
